Build 639 = Camera Pans Up + Roof Bugfix + New Block Placement

Today’s build (639) is up, and addresses:

  • Added ability to go upwards – the camera will now pan up.  As you go higher, things further below you will fade out as you get higher (in low performance mode, this effect is disabled)
  • Fixed bug where you could not pick up items underneath a roof
  • To make building at higher elevations easier, now blocks will be placed on top of whatever the cursor is on.  If you use z-axis lock, the old method will be used instead.

Gold Safe

Today’s update introduce the Gold Safe, in the shop under Household Goods.

The safe allows you to store & retrieve gold.  Anyone can deposit gold into it, but in order to retrieve the gold, you must open it using a password that you specify.  This makes it useful as a donation box, or a shared resource usable by trusted members of your city.

Once you purchase one, be sure to set a password on it, and then close it.  This will prevent strangers from taking gold out of it.

Be careful who you give the password to — once the safe is open, anyone can take gold out of it, or change its password.  Because of this, you might want to build a vault room around it for added security.  You’ll be able to see nearby persons putting money into, taking money out of, or changing the password on a safe.

As you put more gold into the safe, when its open you’ll be able to see larger quantities inside it.  When closed, the quantity will be a secret.

Here are the safe commands (the list can be seen by typing /safe help while near a safe):

  • /safe open <password> (or o <password>)
  • /safe close (or c)
  • /safe pw <password> – sets new password (requires safe to be open)
  • /safe deposit <quantity> (or d <quantity>) (does NOT have to be open)
  • /safe withdraw <quantity (or w <quantity>) (Safe must be open)
  • /safe count

This is Officially S8.0

You may have noticed last week the version number increment up to ‘S8.0.’  I’ve had a couple queries about this, so I thought I’d explain:

S8.0 represents the past ~3months of work on the project.  The major new features are:

  • New playable race: Zombies — Become a zombie and nom on your friends. It’s infectiously fun!
  • The MegaMap — Browse the massive world through a familiar web map interface.
  • Player Trading — Trade items and gold with other players.
  • More Control of your City — Limit access to your town with town doors and grant trusted player citizens more power by making them ‘Town Officials.’
  • Player Customization — Change player color and wear shirts, accessories, and hats.

Numerous additional updates include a new weapon (the Pixel Pistol), whisper support, additional anti-grief protections, basic inventory sell-back support, and performance improvements.  If you’ve been playing regularly, you’ve seen these features be released individually already as one of the multiple times a week updates.

Since the initial public announcement of 8BitMMO less than three months ago over 30,000 players have registered to play the game. This is amazing, and I hope this momentum continues!  It gives me great satisfaction to see folks playing & enjoying the game.

Special thanks to everyone who has submitted ideas via the suggestion box.  Many of the new features in the s8 update were inspired from the top voted suggestions.  Keep ’em coming 🙂

Player Clothing is Live!

One of the top requested features, Player Clothing, is now live!  You can now customize your player with hats, shirts, and accessories:

Check out all the options in Menu > Shop > Clothing.  A few other changes in this build:

  • You can now scroll the shop window with the scroll wheel (handy!)
  • Clicking arrows on chat window scrolls a bit further, so they should be more useable now.
  • Carpets & Roofs have moved to be a submenu of Construction.

Whisper Support

The much requested whisper / private message support is in!  Now you can do one of these to send another player your message:

  • /w <player name> <message>
    Example: /w Sim9 Hello there
  • /w <player name>|<message>
    Example /w Sim9|Hello there
This second version is useful if the player has a space in their name.  IE: /w Three Word Name|hello there

The message will not be shown publicly, nor will it be shown in IRC.  Whispers are still logged though, in case of abuse.

Zombies!

Are you ready to eat your friends’ brains out?  Then head into the shop and check out the new Races submenu.  There’s one entry so far, Zombie.

Select this to turn yourself into a Zombie!  From there, you must seek out delicious (and nutritious!) brains.  As normal, players in town are safe from attacks, but anyone in the wilderness is fair game (hehe, see what I did there?).  Run on up to them and hit spacebar to nom on them.  After you’ve eaten their delicious brain, they will be a zombie too!  That will stave off your hunger… for a while.  Once you die, or Respawn, you will turn back into a Human.

Your text will also be appropriately zombified 😉

Other patch notes for build 588:

  • Health now regenerates on Menu > Respawn
  • /sellallinv had an issue correctly calculating the value of blocks that were almost worthless — that is now fixed.
  • Shop tool tips can now be multiple lines, and have extra padding.  They also will now flip to be on the left of the mouse pointer if there is not enough space to fully show on the right.
  • Fixed an issue where swords wouldn’t be autoselected if you just bought one
